The Cambridge University Law Society (CULS) is one of the oldest (founded 1901) and largest student run societies in the University, the country and indeed the world. With a membership base of over a thousand, its aims are manifold and its enterprises diverse.
On the academic front, the Society publishes a termly magazine, Per Incuriam, which encourages students to contribute articles about the most pertinent issues in the world today. These articles discuss all aspects of Law through the prism of thought-engaging topics. The magazine also includes a ‘Tripos’ section for first-class essays, and articles from illustrious individuals in the legal world.
Mooting is an incredibly proactive area within the Society, with numerous competitions run for all levels, both for Law students and non-Law students, and individuals and teams. CULS also enters teams into national and international mooting competitions, with a team reaching the final of the prestigious Space Law Moot in Hong Kong in Summer 2012.
CULS regularly hosts talks and forums with luminary Speakers. Previous guest speakers have included Lord Judge (Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales), Hillel Neuer (Executive Director of the NGO UN Watch) and Baroness Hale (Justice of the Supreme Court).
Our Foreign Exchange program allows students to explore different cities, for example Madrid and Leiden, to taste life in these cities, meet law students there and study in another European jurisdiction – scratching the surface of what taking part in the University’s Erasmus course is like.
CULS also has a deserved reputation for having one of the best Social calendars in Cambridge University. The Law Ball and Lent Gala are always hotly anticipated and are a night of true decadence and glamour held at some incredible venues. Our May Week Garden Party allows student to kick back in the stunning gardens of Cambridge colleges fellows’ gardens, and relax after their Tripos exams. And the Wintercomfort Charity Quiz regularly raises thousands of pounds for the local charity.
All of this is not to mention the Champagne and Chocolates events throughout the year, Freshers’ Tapas and Returners’ Cupcakes and Cocktails, and other unique and exciting opportunities to socialise and meet with fellow students, providing our members with useful respite from their desks and libraries!
CULS is a Cambridge student’s key source for information concerning legal careers. Our Careers department helps to facilitate each member’s Career path with dinners, presentations and workshops throughout the year, which allows for members to build connections and gain unique insights. Whether you are an aspiring solicitor, barrister or are thinking of pursuing a different route following a Law Degree, we will help you on your way, connecting you to firms, Chambers and institutions. From applications for training contracts or pupillages, vacation schemes and work experience, CULS has something to offer everyone.
Furthermore, our Non-Law department ensures that the specific needs of non-law members are catered for.
CULS’ Alumni department is our fastest growing. Established in 2018, it has since expanded to introduce a student mentorship scheme and glittering alumni dinners, which have been attended by Supreme Court judges and top solicitors and barristers inter alia. The department is continuing to expand with a focus on socials exclusively for Alumni, strengthening the sense of community for CULS members at every stage.
Our Pro Bono department is involved in a range of exciting and rewarding projects including from running a Free Legal Clinic to facilitating access to Cambridge through StreetLaw. This year the department is planning an International Human Rights trip for members.
